…

People want to be what they are not

An interesting conversation in Sunday church meeting.

Dora, my 3 years old daughter, likes to play outside. As a consequence her skin gets dark. Our church leader John liked it and he said:

“I heard that in Asia, some people actually use some kind of cream that suppose to make them look paler. And they use it everyday!”

He might expect laughs from us. But…well, a couple of British did.

We did not get it. “I use it a lot.” said my wife.

“Why?”, surprisingly asked John, “It makes you look paler.”

So I explained the Chinese saying “White skin covers over a multitude of uglinesses”.

“Really?” was what we get as a response. “People want to be what they are not. We think bronze is prettier.”

Anyway, Dora’s dark skin shows her healthiness and we are fine with it.

一次神奇的SQL优化 | 将之典藏

一次神奇的SQL优化 | 将之典藏

How Browsers Work: Behind the Scenes of Modern Web Browsers

How Browsers Work: Behind the Scenes of Modern Web Browsers

Making Wrong Code Look Wrong - Joel on Software

Making Wrong Code Look Wrong - Joel on Software

10 Most Asked Interview Questions: How to Tackle Them

10 Most Asked Interview Questions: How to Tackle Them

Dealing with Online Content Theft (Personal Experience)

Dealing with Online Content Theft (Personal Experience)

Backblaze Blog » Petabytes on a Budget v2.0:Revealing More Secrets

Backblaze Blog » Petabytes on a Budget v2.0:Revealing More Secrets

Howto Choose Opensource License

Howto Choose Opensource License

My NAS Components

Instead of a typical NAS, this is actually a low-end PC. I want a very flexible system (a full Windows or Linux system would be the best) with low cost. Branded NAS boxes are either too weak or too expensive.

This build is without RAID. I don’t need redundant for data saved on it for one. Soft RAID is not good enough anyway for two. It is easy to add a RAID card if needed.

£104 Asus E35M1-M Pro

£21 Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 XMS3 Desktop Memory 4GB

£32 Cooler Master RC-370-KKN1 Elite 370 Midi Tower PC Case

£47 Be Quiet! Pure Power 350W PSU

Altogether around £200 without HDD. I have two external 3.5’ HDDs and plan to make use of them. They will be opened up and stuffed into the box in order to make a total 1.5TB capacity storage. But both of them are almost full so I am going to need another HDD very soon.

The components are on their ways. Will update when the box is up and running.

DVCS-Autosync: A personal Dropbox replacement based on Git | Rene Mayrhofer's virtual home

DVCS-Autosync: A personal Dropbox replacement based on Git | Rene Mayrhofer's virtual home:
dvcs-autosync is a project to create an open source replacement for Dropbox/Wuala/Box.net/etc. based on distributed version control systems (DVCS). It offers nearly instantaneous mutual updates when a file is added or changed on one side but with the added benefit of (local, distributed) versioning and that it does not rely on a centralized service provider, but can be used with any DVCS hosting option including a completely separate server - your data remains your own.

The Internet is Still the Wild West, and It's Every Man for Himself - pzxc

The Internet is Still the Wild West, and It's Every Man for Himself - pzxc:
One Way to Deal with Internet Thieves

so leet, so right.

so leet, so right.

Amazon VPC Adds Dedicated Instances

Amazon VPC Adds Dedicated Instances
